Paris is the capital of France and is at the same time its cultural, financial and administrative center. There are many monuments here, thanks to which the city is visited annually by over 30 million tourists. Paris, which is a separate department number 75, is also the capital of the Île-de-France administrative region. The city has a concentric layout with boulevards that are star-shaped. The axis of Paris is the indented valley of the Seine, dividing Paris into two parts: the right-bank (north) Rive Droite and the left-bank (south) Rive Gauche. The most famous street in Paris is the Avenue des Champs Elysees, and the landmark is the Eiffel Tower built in 1889 and the Notre Dame Cathedral. In Paris, you can also admire works of art collected in one of the world’s largest museums, which is the Louvre, whose resources include, among others, the world-famous Mona Lisa and the statue of Venus de Milo.

Paris is located in the northwest of France, on the Seine River. In the north of the village, the great North European plain ends and the Paris Basin begins, it surrounds the Seine valley and covers most of Northern France. Paris as the capital of the Île-de-France administrative region which includes, in addition to the Paris department, the following departments:

From January 1, 1860, Paris is divided into 20 districts (French arrondissement). The districts are numbered and their numbering is in a clockwise spiral from the center (forming the shape of a snail’s shell). The most important tourist districts are numbered 1-8. Each district has an elected council (conseil d’arrondissement), which in turn elects its president (mayor). The delegation of members of each district forms the Paris Council (conseil de Paris), which elects the mayor of Paris (position created in 1977).

Paris has a warm, temperate maritime climate influenced by the North Atlantic current. The climate is mild to moderately humid. Summers in Paris are usually warm and pleasant with temperatures around the same level 15 – 25 degrees C with a lot of sunlight. Even so, there are several days with temperatures reaching up to 30 degrees C.. There are also long, difficult weather conditions, such as the heat wave of 2003, when the temperatures did not fall below 32 degrees and for several days exceeded 40 degrees C. Spring and autumn are dominated by mild days and brisk nights, although the weather is changeable and unstable in both seasons are often unexpected cold days. In winter, the days are short, insolation is low, and the temperature is about 7 degrees C. In winter, however, frosts and temperatures down to -5 degrees C can occur, snow is rare and without accumulation. Extreme events such as a wave of frost and heavy snowfall can also occur during this season. It rains frequently and although Paris is not a very rainy city, it can be met with one-off and sudden heavy rains.
