Monastir is a port city in the central part of Tunisia’s east coast, approximately 15 km south of Sousse. The history of the Monastery dates back to Phoenician and Roman times. The city experienced its golden age in the Middle Ages, during the reign of the Aglabid dynasty. The name of the city comes from a Christian monastery.
Formerly, the Monastery was the starting point for Roman emperors during their African expeditions. Currently, this city with a population of around 36,000 is also known as the birthplace of the first president of independent Tunisia – Habib Bourguiba. After regaining independence, intensive reconstruction and modernization of the city began.
