Les Deux Alpes – travel guide

Les Deux Alpes is a ski resort frequented especially by young people. It is located in the Rhône-Alpes region, more specifically in the Isère department in the Dolphin Alps. The resort is located at an altitude of 1,300 to 3,520 meters above sea level. One of the larger towns in the area is Grenoble, 71 kilometers from Les Deux Alpes. The town offers 225 kilometers of varied and perfectly prepared ski slopes. It is also the largest glacier skiing area in Europe. At an altitude of 3,200 meters, there is a snow park, including a half pipe, boredrcross music and dining facilities. The unique atmosphere of the town, supplemented by an excellent offer of related infrastructure, i.e. hotels, restaurants, pubs and discos, makes it one of the favorite places for skiing and other winter sports.

Where is Les Deux Alpes?

The town is located in the south-east of France, near the French-Italian border in the so-called Delphi Alps. It is the northern part of the French Alps. From the Les Deux Alpes ski area, you can easily take the cable car to La Grave at 3,600 meters in the Department of the High Alps. From this town, on clear days, you can see Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps, and also the highest European peak. Mont Blanc can be admired while using one of the ski slopes. The very name of the town of Les Deux Alpes refers to the fact that the main part of the ski area is located in two ski slopes and slides down the ridges of the Girose and Mont-de-Lans glaciers.

Les Deux Alpes – weather

Due to the location of Les Deux Alpes high in the mountains on a glacier, you don’t have to worry too much about the skiing conditions. Of course, the higher they are, the better they are and available all year round. In addition, 214 snow cannons take care of the right amount of snow, which, if necessary and in favorable temperature conditions, can easily fill the lack of snow. As mentioned, the location on the glacier and the height of some routes located as much as 3,600 meters above sea level means that there should not be enough snow on the route. For this reason, the ski season in Les Deux Alpes lasts both in summer and winter. It is the first ski resort in France that allows you to practice winter sports also in summer. Due to the mountain location, the weather can be capricious, namely, as the altitude increases, the air temperature drops, so you need to be prepared for such conditions. It is also worth being prepared for the closure of routes due to bad weather conditions and avalanche hazards.
